Here’s an astounding fact: By 2000, Upper Providence had nearly the same number of jobs (8,949) as it had residents (9,682) in 1990.
Jobs
From 1990 to 2000, job growth rose 142 percent in Upper Providence to 8,949 jobs. Projections to 2025 predict 141 percent growth, or an additional 12,651 jobs. Some of the world’s most important medical advances come from three of Upper Providence’s (and the world’s) largest employers: Wyeth, GlaxoSmithKline, and Quest Diagnostics. Combined, these companies employ nearly 175,000 people worldwide.
Residents
At the same time, population grew 59 percent to 15,398 in 2000 over 1990 and another 7,602 residents are expected in 2025, a 49 percent growth over the next 25 years.
In turn, this job growth prompted a 59 percent surge in population between 1990 and 2000. Homes built since 1990 comprise the majority of the Upper Providence housing stock.
More Stores, More Jobs
As companies have expanded in Upper Providence, new residents and new businesses arrived, prompting more than 300,000 square feet in new retail space in 2001/02 alone. The township’s first contemporary hotel was built in 1998 (The Hampton Inn and Bob Evans Restaurant). Target, and Lowe’s opened in Oaks in 2001/02.
Planning
As Upper Providence has grown, many dedicated volunteers, led by the township Board of Supervisors have preserved open space, sought sensible growth plans from developers with help from county planners, and built recreational opportunities for our residents.
In addition, numerous safety upgrades in our police department, as well as traffic management, have been added to meet our growing community’s needs. You can learn more about our public safety, traffic and roadwork, and planning programs within this site.
