As the township population grows and new houses and businesses break ground, the Planning and Zoning Department and the Planning Commission work together to review active land development plans as they move through the township’s development process to ensure that new construction complies with township regulations and long-range planning goals.

The Land Development Process

The Planning and Zoning Department processes land development or subdivision applications, submits them for consultant review, and presents them to the Planning Commission for consideration with recommendations.

Inspections and Permits

The department emphasizes the protection of residents' health, safety, and welfare and ensures that all structures comply with the township’s building code and zoning ordinances.

Construction projects must comply with the following codes, which are enforced by the building inspector:

  • Commercial work: The International Building Code, 2006 edition
  • Residential work: The International Residential Code, 2006 edition

Inspections are made between 8:30 a.m. and noon.

Residents must obtain a permit for:

  • New buildings and homes
  • Sheds
  • Barns
  • Garages
  • Patios with footers
  • Gazebos
  • Decks
  • Fences
  • Additions or structural alterations
  • Yard sales
  • Burning
  • In-ground and above ground pools
  • Roofing
  • Basement alterations

Residents should display permits in a front window throughout construction and should call for an inspection 24 hours in advance. Download permit forms.

The Planning Commission

The Planning Commission's members oversee all development proposals for the township, working in conjunction with Planning and Zoning to determine a project's feasibility, its impacts on the surrounding area and traffic, and its compliance with township codes. Then, they submit development plans with their recommendations to the Board of Supervisors for approval.
