[ARCHIVED] Honoring Long-Time Crossing Guard John Wentworth III Upon Retirement from UPT Elementary

John Wentworth III

After more than two decades of faithfully guiding generations of students across the street and safely into school, John Wentworth III will hang up his crossing guard vest for the last time this June. His last day at Upper Providence Elementary School will be June 5, 2025—marking 22 years of dedicated service to the school and the community.

John began his post in 2003, the very year UPT Elementary first opened its doors. At the time, he was a stay-at-home father whose own children had just started full-day kindergarten. Looking for something that aligned with his parenting schedule, he found his perfect fit at the crosswalk. What started as a practical choice quickly became a passion.

Ask John what he’ll miss most, and the answer is immediate: “Just the kids—the kids are the favorite part. Every day there’s always something different.” Over the years, he’s watched young students grow up, graduate, and even start families of their own. “Some of them are married with kids now,” he laughs. “It’s been fun to watch that.”

Through rain, snow, and sunshine, John has been a reliable and reassuring presence—smiling, waving, and checking in with thousands of students (and their parents) over the years. For many families, he was one of the first friendly faces they saw each morning.

Though he’s retiring from his crossing guard duties, John will remain a familiar figure in the community. As Fire Police Captain with the Trappe Fire Company, he’ll still be serving and protecting—just in a different uniform.

John is the proud father of three children and grandfather to one grandson. While he says he has no major plans for retirement, one thing is certain: his legacy at Upper Providence Elementary will last long beyond his final day.

Thank you, John, for 22 years of commitment, kindness, and care. The corner won’t be the same without you.
